The majority of daily transport by passenger cars, meanwhile, are short journeys from home to work or school. Such short trips are the easiest to replace with alternative, emission-free modes of transport.

But still only few people use electric bicycles, or e-bikes, for their daily transport needs. To encourage more people to take up emission-free transport modes, more attractive alternatives are clearly needed.

The shift to electric will open up all sorts of new vehicle categories – and we found this one super interesting.

▶1. The Veemo SE - Urban Transport Reimagined
The Veemo SE Consumer Edition is a product born from years of Research & Development. Veemo is a revolutionary, semi-enclosed, pedal-electric vehicle unlike anything on the market. This smooth, dynamic, elegant velomobile is the world's most practical utilitarian vehicle to get you from A to B on-time, every time. More importantly, it does so with zero-emissions for pennies on the dollar compared to driving a car. Our full-power ride mode delivers a great experience, whether you are headed up the road for groceries or using Veemo as your daily commuter.

▶ 2. Arcimoto - Ultra Efficient Electric Vehicles
Three-wheeled vehicles have always been a tough sell in America. In a market traditionally known for consumers buying the biggest vehicle their dollar can cover, three-wheelers like the Vanderhall Edison and the Polaris Slingshot are niche low-volume products designed for weekend drives. But the automotive market's electrification has some upstarts like Aptera, ElectraMeccanica, and Arcimoto revisiting American interest in daily three-wheeled transport.

▶ 3. Z-TRITON 2.0
When you first see the Z-Triton 2.0 you may find yourself wondering whether this strange-looking vehicle is a boat, a trike, or some kind of micro-shelter – and it's a yes to all three. After first being unveiled as a prototype back in 2020, Z-Triton designer Zeltini has now spent time refining its idea and is releasing it as a production model, starting at roughly €14,500 (US$16,300).

▶ 4. Northern Light Motors - Northern Light 428
Taking its name from the wavelength of the blue spectrum of the aurora borealis, the 428 is currently being developed by British startup Northern Light Motors. The company is headed by automotive designer Graham Browne – he previously designed sports cars for UK automaker TVR, including the one-off Scamander amphibious vehicle.

For one thing, the 428's pedals aren't directly linked to the drive wheel. Instead, the crankset spins up a generator, which in turn charges the 48V/10-Ah battery that powers the rear hub motor – we've seen similar arrangements in the Mando Footloose ebike and Podbike velomobile. This series hybrid system lets riders generate and store electricity while pedalling on relatively easy terrain, for later use when climbing hills or starting up from a standstill.

▶ 5. Finnish-built Kinner velomobile is like a human-powered classic car
Created by Finnish guitar-builder and classic-vehicle-restorer Ari Jukka Luomaranta, the Kinner takes its name from the Finnish term Kinneri, which was used to describe velomobiles in the 1940s. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the vehicles, they're essentially recumbent trikes – or in some cases quadricycles – that enclose the rider within an aerodynamic body.

▶ 6. Covered four-wheeled e-bike future-proofs commutes
Podbike represents the next generation of electric bicycles. The Podbike Frikar e-bike has four wheels, a protective cover and electric support for speeds up to 25 km/h, making work commutes more enjoyable and comfortable.

▶ 7. The Twike 5 is kind of like a pedal-assist ebike, except it's a fully enclosed car capable of 120 mph speeds and 310-mile range fvigures while letting you sneak in a bit of exercise.

The Twike 5 is an ingenious road vehicle that allows commuters to steal a bit of fitness work as they sit in traffic. You sit in the twin-seat, waterproof, lockable cabin and pedal away like you're on an exercise bike – and you are, really. The pedals connect to a generator that tops up the battery on this nifty little jigger as you drive along.
