In the years leading up to the collapse of MG Rover, the British car maker produced a series of very credible hot hatches and performance saloons. Among them was the ZT V8, which was completely reengineered to be rear-wheel drive.

But the maddest exercise of all was the MG XPower SV, a carbon fibre-bodied supercar styled by Peter Stevens and powered by a V8 producing as much as 385bhp. But it was doomed from the start – there's a rumour that not a single car was sold to a genuine customer.
