Older adults, especially women have a high risk of bone fracture due to their susceptibility of osteoporosis. It is very important to diagnose osteoporosis early on in order to prevent fractures. Dr. Fatemeh Jazinizadeh, a biomechanics researcher at McMaster University is developing ways to make scanning and diagnosis more effective. For example, she uses the machine learning algorithm to improve the accuracy of DEXA bone imaging. Her research will help facilitate effective interventions to prevent hip fractures in the aging community.

This video was made by McMaster University student Bhavika Nayyar, Jhanvi Shah, Umar Hayat, and Prabhjot Bangar in collaboration with the McMaster Demystifying Medicine Program.

We would like to acknowledge the contribution of Dr. Fatemeh Jazinizadeh for her efforts in the making of this video. Dr. Fatemeh Jazinizadeh is a Mechanical Engineering Instructor & Researcher at McMaster University who investigates DEXA imaging, bone geometry and bone mineral density (BMD) to predict fracture risk.
