In this video we visit Pakenham, the terminus of the Pakenham Line in Melbourne's outer south-eastern suburbs. Pakenham is currently undergoing a major grade separation project to remove three level crossings in the area at Main Street, McGregor Road, and Racecourse Road. Not only will this project see Pakenham station rebuilt above ground, but it will also see electrified Metro services extended 2km to a new terminus at East Pakenham station to serve growing new suburbs and allow for separation between terminating Metro services and V/Line Gippsland Line services passing through.

We visit the station in late-March 2024 where progress on the new Pakenham station is well-advanced with most of the new elevated rail line complete and the platforms; particularly the citybound platform, largely complete. There's still work to be done on the Pakenham-bound platform, including the large overhead canopy and access to ground level.

We start the video at the current station where we see some High Capacity Metro Trains arrive and depart the station, and take a tour inside some while they sat in the platform. We also see a couple of V/Line Vlocities too. Afterwards we then head outside the station to the Main Street level crossing where we see some additional trains.

At the end of the video we visit the Racecourse Road level crossing where we see two V/Line trains. This crossing is notable for being one of the few in Melbourne that still features a mechanical Westinghouse hybrid bell, abit on one side. I didn't get the time to visit the McGregor Road level crossing on this visit but I'll make time to check it out before it closes for good, which is fairly soon...

It's been confirmed that the current Pakenham station will close on the 17th May 2024 to allow for another major construction blitz on the project. The new Pakenham Station as well as the extension to East Pakenham is set to open in early June, although an exact opening date hasn't been set yet.
