Since 2014, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) has been working on the Ocean program in the Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) of the Cabinet Office of the Government of Japan, to develop new techniques for environmental impact assessment and environmental monitoring. The SIP-ocean program has conducted to develop cost- effective monitoring techniques and observation tools, which is required in management of marine protected areas and commercial based activities on seabed mining.

2014年より内閣府が主導する戦略的イノベーション創造プログラム（SIP）は海洋研究開発機構と協働して海洋環境での影響評価とモニタリングの技術開発を推進してきました。SIP海洋プログラムでは省力化と効率に優れた調査観測の技術を開発し、海洋保護区の管理とモニタリング、また商業ベースでの海底資源開発での利用を目指しています。
