In my review I called the new 2022 Apple Watch SE 2 the best value starter Apple Watch out right now, as it offers the core apple Watch features for an attractive price. But, with the SE 2 the previous SE 1 just became even more affordable. If you are looking to upgrade your older Apple Watch Series 3 or are looking to get your first Apple Watch, the question is should you buy the latest Apple Watch SE 2 or is it worth saving some cash and getting the Apple Watch SE 1 instead? Price: Apple sell SE 2 for $249. Apple no longer sell SE 1 but on Amazon, eBay, I found 40mm version for around $170. Both great prices but $80 is a significant saving. Similarities. The SE 2 and SE 1 have a lot of common. Same design, from outside practically identical, same dimensions. SE 2 comes in Midnight vs Space Grey and has matte finish on back - otherwise the same. Identical great displays, rounded corners vs older Series 3 look more modern. Both SE 2 and SE 1 don’t have an always on display like on Series 8 and Series 7. Battery life is good on both watches, lasting all day (guide for how I setup for max features and battery life). In terms of those core Apple Watch features, both offer: messages, calls, water resistant to 50m, Fitness tracking, 24h continues heart rate monitoring, Sleep tracking, Siri, Apple Pay, Maps. Great so that means just get the SE 1 and save the cash right? Well, not so fast. Differences. The single biggest upgrade the Apple Watch SE 2 gets is the new more powerful processor - in fact the same processor as from the new Series 8. Important for two reasons. 1. Watch will perform very fast today, just as fast as the S8 and noticeably snappier compared to the SE 1. 2. Longevity. This means the Watch will support new software updates for many years, I’d estimate 5 maybe even 6 years! Compared to the SE 1 which I would expect to get another 2-3 years of software support. Big difference, meaning SE 2 will last almost twice as long. The SE 2 also adds crash detection. So which should you buy? Since the features are almost identical, with exception to crash detection, here is what this comparison comes down to: $249 SE 2, last 5-6 years of software support and new features. $170, $80 less, SE 1, last 2-3 years of software support and new features. If you divide this cost over the years each watch will likely last, the SE 2 is the better value option and better long term investment. This means if you are coming from an older model Apple Watch, for example the Series 3, go for the SE 2. However, if you are a firs time Apple Watch buyer and not yet sure if the Apple Watch is right for you, spending a bit less is not a bad idea as for $170 you can get the Apple Watch experience and see if the watch it right for you. If so, great then upgrade a few years down the road and if not, $170 is a smaller price to pay. But again for most, and especially if you are already an Apple Watch user, I suggest getting the new Apple Watch SE 2.
