The striking appearance of black and white cookies (also known as half moon cookies) make them one of the most iconic cookies out there. They are especially popular in New York and were even featured in Seinfeld. The cookie base isn’t just a normal sugar cookie though. It’s soft, tender, and more like cake but more dense than whoopie pies. I’ll show you exactly how to get this authentic taste and texture. This recipe is so easy. You don’t need a stand mixer and there’s no chill time.

Recipe (yields 11 cookies)
½ cup salted butter (1 stick), microwave for 15 seconds to soften
½ cup or 4 ounces of sour cream
¾ cup white sugar
¼ tsp himalayan pink salt (use ½ tsp if you are using unsalted butter)
1 egg
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp baking powder
200g flour sifted (approximately 1 1/3 cups)

Bake at 350 deg F for 15-17 minutes until edges are golden.

Vanilla icing
⅔ cup powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
2-3 tsp of water or milk to get a thick icing consistency

Chocolate icing
⅔ cup powdered sugar
1 Tbs cocoa powder
1 tsp vanilla extract
3-4 tsp of water or milk to get a thick icing consistency

Mix each icing just before applying to the cookies so they don’t dry out.
