Chevy's compact Trax crossover got a complete redesign for 2024, growing in size, adding in new tech features, and wrapping it all up with a sleek new exterior design. But the best part is the price...think $22,500 for a base model and just $27,000 for the fully-loaded RS model we tested here.

So is it worth it?

Design and Interior:
The new Trax stands out with a roomy cabin, a low dashboard for expansive forward and side views, and stylish design elements including large, round air vents and a central touchscreen housed in a piano-black panel. Despite its affordable price point, the vehicle doesn't look cheap, thanks to thoughtful material choices and build quality. The interior features basic plastics and cloths that blend well together, although some cost-saving measures like hard plastic door panels and a felt-like material under the seats are evident

Powertrain and Performance:
All trim levels of the 2024 Trax are powered by a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine, paired with a conventional six-speed automatic transmission. The Trax is front-wheel-drive only; AWD isn't even offered as an option.

While that's less horsepower than the previous-generation Trax (and the car is now bigger), this setup provides a surprisingly refined ride, with the engine delivering responsive and punchy power thanks to its 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. Unlike many competitors that use continuously variable automatic transmissions (CVTs), the Trax's six-speed automatic enhances the driving experience with its responsiveness and directness.

Technology and Safety:
The Trax offers a fully digitized dash with an 8.0-inch driver display and an 11.0-inch central screen for higher-end trims, including the 2RS trim we tested. These screens feature crisp displays, attractive graphics, and easy-to-use menus. Entry-level models come with a smaller 8.0-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. But the best part is that no matter which trim you choose or what size screen your Trax comes with, all models come standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Safety features include Chevrolet Safety Assist as standard on the LS grade, with options for additional driver aids like rear cross-traffic alerts and side blind-spot monitoring available through packages.

Trim Levels and Pricing:
The Trax lineup starts with the LS grade, offering significant value with standard features like wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Chevrolet Safety Assist. The range also includes RS and Activ trims, with style differences rather than mechanical, allowing buyers to choose based on aesthetics rather than performance tweaks. Pricing remains competitive across the range, emphasizing the Trax's position as a budget-friendly option without feeling "cheap."

Comparison with the previous generation:
Compared to its predecessor, the 2024 Trax represents a significant upgrade in nearly every aspect. It offers more space, a more sophisticated and comfortable ride, advanced technology, and improved safety features. The move to a conventional six-speed automatic transmission over a CVT in many rivals or the previous generation's options further distinguishes it in terms of driving experience. The design refresh, both inside and out, along with the inclusion of modern tech and safety features at its price point, positions the new Trax as a compelling choice in the subcompact SUV segment.
