In this video I share my perspective on why I think it is important that, rather than having it be an afterthought, we consider user privacy before we design software. Especially in this new wave of decentralized applications where it will be more difficult to undo them.

I define privacy as being the ability to control who can observe you, look at information about you, and the communications that you broadcast.

I give three reasons why I think normal law abiding citizens would want this ability:

1. Practice and Experimentation
2. Social Harmony
3. Self Sovereignty & Protection

(And there are many others!)

*This is just my current perspective and I am always willing to change my mind if people can persuade me with a logical argument.*

::Videos I Mention::

0:22 Mark Zuckerburg sweats when asked about privacy    • Video

13:56 Think different ad campaign    • Video

24:26 Taylor Swift interview about being paranoid of being watched through webcams after writing blog requesting Apple pay Apple Music's artist during free trial. (Is on Apple Music not YouTube. So I can’t link it... search for ‘Taylor Swift Beats 1 Interview’ with Zane Lowe. Story is at around 6:00 mark)

::Table of Contents::

0:00 Intro on why I and doing this video.

1:11 My definition of privacy

2:31 A problem with many applications is that they are not straightforward... and are in many ways purposely deceptive about why they are gathering your information.

3:33 When building decentralized applications we should really consider the consequences of privacy *before* we build them and release them to the world. Tesla vs Edison example.

5:00 Why would someone want privacy? Is it just because they are criminals?

6:14 Practice and Experimentation. Learning to play guitar example.

7:46 Stand guard at the door of your mind. Jeff Bezos saying you have to be able to be misunderstood as an entrepreneur.

9:43 What are the mechanics of why innovators are misunderstood?? Because they are doing something new and are a minority relative to the rest of the population.

13:15 We need to protect these innovators during their creative process in order to have a prosperous society. Otherwise we may have a society that resembles 1984 or Brave New World... where it is difficult to be different... and therefore society becomes stagnant. Steve Jobs at Apple case study.

15:57 Social Harmony. Deleting facebook experience. Merging some things is like putting mentos and coke together. Story of getting on a bus to a poor neighborhood.

21:23 Self Sovereignty and Protection. Xmen quote. If someone had a map of your psychology could you have sovereignty? 2nd amendment metaphor for how why we need a counterbalance to power.

25:00 Summary of why we need to consider this stuff. In order to have a prosperous society.
