The M16 and its derivatives like the M4 has been the US Army’s weapon of choice for almost 60 years, but its days are finally numbered. What’s next? Meet the next-generation combat rifle: the SIG Sauer XM5. Part of the Army’s Next-Generation Squad Weapon Program, the XM5 will be equipped with the M157 Next-Generation Squad Weapon-Fire Control (NGSW-FC) system, which will allow soldiers to be more accurate over longer ranges. The NGSW-FC integrates several advanced technologies, “including a variable magnification optic, backup etched reticle, laser rangefinder, ballistic calculator, atmospheric sensor suite, compass, Intra-Soldier Wireless, visible and infrared aiming lasers, and a digital display overlay. There are other advantages. The XM5’s short-stroke piston firing mechanism will require less cleaning than the M16 series gas-powered system.
Do you think it’s a good replacement for the M16? Let us know in the comments.
