The Hunger Games Would Not Have Been The Same Without All The VFX

Even though The Hunger Games movies came out many years ago, we still can’t get over just how great these movies are, and how well they hold up today! One of the things that impressed us the most is how The Hunger Games used CGI to create the dystopian world of Panem, and how we barely noticed that there was any animation at all! Even though The Hunger Games isn’t usually lumped into the same category as effects-heavy movies like The Lion King, The Jungle Book, or Jurassic World, it actually had a ton of incredible effects hidden in plain sight. Take Jennifer Lawrence’s archery skills. While she did fifteen hours of intense training with an Olympic archer, they actually animated all of her arrows in the movie, for the safety of the cast and crew! Or the infamous fire dress that Cinna created for her first time on stage with Caesar, which was also animation because… well, because lighting Jennifer Lawrence on fire sounds like a bad idea. The Capitol itself was almost entirely made up of CGI, and the Tracker Jackers, whose venom was later used to infect Josh Hutcherson’s Peeta were thankfully totally CGI as well. Even the mines in District Twelve that Liam Hemsworth’s character Gale started out working in were added in post, along with many of the other details from other Panem Districts. All of these effects and so many more added to the incredible visual language of The Hunger Games.
