The Daedalus-class cruiser had been in service to the United Earth Space Probe Agency as a science vessel. The spherical design of her primary hull allowed for more internal space to conduct the various experiments Daedalus’ mission called for.

As part of Operation Deploy, all first-generation (Mark I) Daedalus cruisers were refitted with current propulsion and weapons packages. When war broke out with the Romulans, Starfleet constructed a wave of Daedalus Mark II’s which were adaptable to different mission profiles.
