Prior to the opening of three new MTR stations in the Western District, namely Sai Yung Pun, HKU and Kennedy Town in late 2014, the old neighbourhood of Kennedy Town remained largely untouched, retaining its traditional characteristics and flavour. The opening of the MTr station signalled the gentrification process of the town. Recent years saw an influx of people fleeing high rents in Central and the Mid-Levels. This has been accompanied by new bars and restaurants to such an extent it has been called the new Soho or Lan Kwai Fong. In this video, I will be touring you in this quaint neighborhood which I also once called home (I used to live in Kennedy Town when I was a graduate student at HKU). The tour starts at the Kennedy Town MTR station, walking around the key streets and ending the new Belcher Bay Promenade. I've also summarized the rich history and gentrification of the district in the CAPTIONS (cc) throughout the video, so please stay till the end.
