Microturbines are a micro-energy application used to generate power in auxiliary power units (APUs), backup generators and other standby electrical-generation needs. They are commonly used in propulsion systems for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for both jet propulsion and hybrid-electric drivetrains.

Metal additive manufacturing (AM) of gas power turbines is becoming more common as it enables design freedom, light-weighting, and better performance. The Aurelius Mk1 by Sierra Turbines aims to increase time-between-overhaul by 40X and power-to-weight ratio by 10X by leveraging VELO3D’s metal 3D printing process in HASTELLOY® X.
