Japan joined the Axis powers in December 1941--and quickly conquered most of the Western Pacific, following the attack on Pearl Harbor and the European colonies in the Pacific.The United States joined the Allies on December 7, 1941. Basically, Germany and Japan both the Axis powers attacked the US to bring it to war. On the other hand, Japan had an old enmity with China; The Second Sino-Japanese War was going on between these two countries since the mid-1930s. As a result, China also joined the Allies. World War II ended with the unconditional surrender of both Germany and Japan in 1945. This war saw the devastating application of many newly discovered technologies. The most horrific use of these was nuclear weapons. This weapon was invented in the wake of the Great War and the war ended with its destruction. Excluding all reconstruction work, the total cost in 1945 alone was $1 trillion. Immediately after this war, the whole of Europe was divided into two parts; One part was Western Europe and the other part included Soviet Russia. Later, this Russian Union was broken and many small states were born. NATO was formed by Western European countries and the border lines of all European countries began to be determined. The Cold War broke out between the countries included in the Wars Pact. This is how the Second World War created a novel drama on the world stage.
