The Hitler Youth, or Hitlerjugend in German, was the youth movement of the Nazi party that ruled Germany from 1933 to 1945. Founded in 1926, its aim was to indoctrinate and pre-militarily train young Germans in the principles of Nazism. It was the only authorised youth organisation in the country and membership was compulsory for all young people aged between 14 and 18. The Hitler Youth was divided into several groups according to the age and sex of the members, who took part in a variety of activities ranging from sport to war. They played an important role in spreading Nazi ideology and mobilising young people in defence of the regime.
