In the Chinese Drawing Room of Huis ten Bosch Palace, the age-old silk curtains from China had to be replaced. They date from the time that Stadholder William V and princess Wilhelmina of Prussia used the palace as a summer residence.
The new curtains became contemporary examples on which hundreds of Dutch people helped embroider, including Queen Máxima herself. Princess Beatrix, Máxima's mother-in-law who in her years as Queen lived at Huis ten Bosch Palace, says she has no interest in embroidery and can't even hold a needle. She more likes to sculpt.
The curtains include waterworks and buildings from all over the Netherlands, from Huis ten Bosch Palace itself to the St Servaas Bridge in Maastricht, the Cruquius pumping station and the Tilburg town hall. Máxima had promised the craftsmen that they could come and see the end result in her residential palace.
