India indeed is a beautiful land of rivers and rivers always have a magical and mystical beauty attached to it. It lends itself to a variety of images in our minds. Its timeless & ageless flow denotes Jeevan Ki Dhara (Direction of Life).

Rivers also play a significant role in our life. We therefore see many songs with river themes in our Indian films and in this particular song, you can see the protagonist Jeetendra very simply dressed standing on the boat and singing this song. The boatman (Maajhi) is also shown in the song and therefore the lyrics are so aptly written O Maajhi Re.

Also, looking at a river or being at the side of a flowing river can inspire and soothen a person as much as it can bring calming thoughts as is shown in this song. I think river water and its sounds have a musical feel which great composers like Hemant Kumar (the fantastic song Woh Shaam Kuch Ajeeb Thi shot on Hoogly river), R.D.Burman (remember the song Chingari Koi Bhadke again shot on Hoogly river) and Bhupen Hazarika have captured in their songs.

This song ‘O Maajhi Re’ is from film Khushboo. The film was released in 1975, directed by Gulzaar sahab. This song’s lyrics were also written by Gulzaar sahab. The film’s music was composed by the great Panchamda (R.D.Burman) and sung by the genius Kishore Kumar (Kishoreda).

This song is nothing less than an absolute masterpiece, beautifully created by The Magnificent Trio Of Musical Magicians – RD+KK+Gulzar, and this song happens to be my all-time favourite. What a beautiful composition by Panchamda, what profound lyrics by Gulzaar Sahab and what an incredible singing by Kishoreda!! Simply out of this world. You just have to listen to this song with your eyes closed, and you will in no time be floating on a boat on a river.

The song is about life’s unstoppable journey without a shore and an anchor. The river has eroded many shores which are now flowing with the river. Life is also like a paper boat at times, which flows directionless and it can’t reach any shore and gets destroyed by the river water itself. The lyrics are awesomely written which describe the solitude and yearning of the protagonist of the film.

The song has a magical hollow effect on the listeners with Kishore Kumar’s voice full of pain and pathos on the listener’s mind and ears.

Pancham da always said that though Kishore da was an untrained singer like many other playback singers, he was like a reservoir of talent, who could improvise any song incredibly and he would provide vocal insights and expression beyond the composer’s imagination.

Enjoy this soulfully magical song.

Both the actors Jitendra ji and Hema ji have portrayed their characters so well in this movie.
