Film shot recently in Venice near the, “palazzi grigi ”, (the grey immortal palaces in the song, along the Canale Grande), on the approach of “global lockdown” 31/10/2020.

The bell is that of the campanile of San Sylvester church in San Polo, right across from where this was shot. I recorded it the night before. The key, the pace and rhythm of the bell fitting so well with the song, together the grey palaces palaces, makes me suspect that the song was conceived-of very near to this place.

***A gondolier bears the body of his deceased girlfriend to the cemetery. At outset of the song his girlfriend seems to be like one of the beautiful flowers filling the boat, but it turns out she had passed-on....

...It seems to him in the moment, that the gondola itself is carrying him along, helping her master do this supremely difficult task. This speaks to the personal relationship all sailors have to their watercraft.***
