• Imperative sentences are used to make statements like commands, suggestions or directions.
• The subject of an imperative sentence is always you. The subject YOU is not in the sentence.
• Imperative sentences begin with the base form of the main verb.

COMMAND
• Ask for directions.
• Cross the sidewalk.

NEGATIVE COMMAND
• Don't ask for directions.
• Don't cross the sidewalk.

POLITE COMMAND
• Please stand on the curb.
• Please wait at the bus stop.

POLITE NEGATIVE COMMAND
• Please don't stand on the curb.
• Please don't wait at the bus stop.

SUGGESTION
• Let's cross at the crosswalk.
• Let's turn at the corner.

NEGATIVE SUGGESTION
• Let's not cross at the crosswalk.
• Let's not turn at the corner.

• To ask for directions use the question words which way followed by the verb to be.
• The answer includes the direction of the subject or a set of directions to a location.

QUESTION
Which way is the bus going?
Which way is the bank?


ANSWER
The bus is going north.
The bank is that way.
