There's a Chinese proverb that says, 'You cannot prevent the birds of sorrow from flying over your head but you can prevent them from building nests in your hair.' Grief is not obligatory. The events of life may be unavoidable, but the responses to them are.

Shri Shantananda Sarasvati said the laws of the universe bind man in every aspect of his existence except in one aspect. The individual is free in bhāvanā, which is the emotional attitude or ground. So we can deliberately an attitude within ourselves and work accordingly. Even in miserable conditions people can become happy; we also see that in happy conditions people can become miserable.

Viktor Frankl, who was a prisoner in a concentration camp in WWII said: We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts, comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing, the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances. This is man's free will to respond as he chooses to circumstances.
