The Suzuki Jimny, a popular mini-off-road vehicle, is poised to give birth to a larger sister with an extra door and a longer wheelbase. Just in case you forgot, this beautiful 4x4 is known as a kei car in Japan. Its dimensions are 3,395 mm (133.7 inches) long, 1,475 mm (58.1 inches) wide, and 1,725 mm (67.9 inches) high. While the international version (Jimny Sierra in Japan) is slightly roomier, it lacks proper back doors and legroom.

Fortunately, there are reports that a more realistic derivative model is on its way. According to a Suzuki official quoted by the Japanese website Autoc-One, the five-door Jimny will be available in 2022. The vehicle was originally scheduled to make its premiere during the October Tokyo Motor Show. Unfortunately, the event, like many others of its kind, has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The car's official name, according to accounts, is Jimny Long. A 300 mm (11.8 in) wheelbase expansion is also planned to suit the new name.

The Jimny, a family vehicle, will become heavier as its dimensions rise. Suzuki hopes to compensate by adding a more powerful engine. Factory engineers are said to have installed turbocharging and a tiny hybrid system. There is little doubt that these changes are not free. According to Autoc-One, the Jimny Long will cost around 300,000 yen (Rp. 39.1 million) more than the Jimny Sierra in JDM specifications.

The only notable alteration to the exterior will be the front grille; other than the back doors, there will be few cosmetic changes. After reconstruction, the section's present five-slot vertical layout was replaced by a single horizontal bar. Curiously, there are reports that Suzuki is developing a more expensive version of the Jimny Long that will resemble a smaller Mercedes G-Class. Nonetheless, don't take this information seriously.

Suzuki is set to debut the Jimny Long next year, along with a mid-cycle update to the current three-door form. We may expect to see both of these in Japan before they expand to other regions across the world. If the engine is electric and turbocharged, I hope the car passes the emissions test in Europe so that it can be sold again as a passenger vehicle. Currently, only two-seater commercial models are available on the Blue Continent.
