'Born Digital: The story of a distracted generation': A discussion of his new book, with Bob Wigley (UK Finance)

Why you should watch: This is not the CSFI's usual territory - but technology certainly is, and what one of the UK's senior financial figures feels about where technology is leading our children is genuinely important. Bob Wigley has spoken with hundreds of millennials and GenZers, and has produced a book which (IMHO) is pretty damn terrifying in terms of what it says about how young people use social media, how they interact with it, how it uses them, and how it essentially isolates them from anyone outside their age cohort. It makes uncomfortable reading for a libertarian, but maybe there is no alternative to tighter control of the platforms and some sort of industry regulator on the Ofcom model. The UK's On-line Harms Bill is currently wending its way through Parliament; this book is mandatory reading for both supporters and opponents.

Moderators: Andrew Hilton (Director, CSFI) & Leighton Hughes (FinTech Lead, CSFI)

Bob Wigley is Chairman of UK Finance, of Vesta Global Holdings and of Bink, as well as a NED at a number of other tech and non-tech firms. He is a former Chairman of Victoria Beckham Ltd, a former ED of Royal Mail, a former member of the BofE's Court, and, of course, a former Chair of Merrill Lynch Europe, Middle East and Africa. He is also a Visiting Fellow at Said, an Honorary Fellow at Judge, an Adjunct Fellow at the University of Queensland, and an important supporter of his alma mater, the University of Bath. A man of many parts.
