Big new performance SUV is Volkswagen Australia’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle and its most powerful production model ever.

The 2024 Volkswagen Touareg R will finally arrive in Australia in April, when it will be the flagship of the German brand’s heavily-upgraded large five-seat luxury SUV range.

A combination of V6 turbo-petrol performance and electric boost make it the most powerful Volkswagen production model ever. It will also be Volkswagen’s Australia’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) as the German brand’s EV onslaught draws near.

But despite other new Touareg variants bringing more equipment for less money, the first ever R version’s big 340kW/700Nm outputs won’t come cheap, as Toby Hagon reveals in this first up-close look Down Under.
