People often think of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as an ancient battle between Judaism and Islam. Not true, says Dr. Shabir Ally. Throughout history, the two religions have largely co-existed peacefully, and Jews thrived in Muslim lands. Dr. Shabir points out that in the 19th century, Christian Zionism developed, bringing with it the idea that for Jesus to return, Israel would have be established, and Jews would have to have a homeland. Then Theodor Herzl in the late 19th century enunciated Jewish Zionism, which was a solution to the persecution and suffering Jews were experiencing around the world. These two religious streams of thought combined together with the objective of getting Jews to migrate to what was then Palestine from other parts of the world. And this call to migrate persists today. Christian Zionist organizations in the US fund Jews to make aliya to Israel. They help settlers illegally occupy portions of the West Bank. For them, this is not illegal; God has given Jews the title deed. Dr. Shabir also laments how the Israeli PM has referred to biblical passages to lend justification for the atrocities he is enacting against Palestinians. He advises people of faith to examine their consciences when reading their scriptures and speak with one voice to say the war must stop, innocent lives must be saved, and justice must prevail.
