The AT-6/SNJ "Texan" air race class (or "Harvard" in Great Britain & Canada), consists of WWII era advanced training aircraft produced by North American Aviation, who also produced the famous P-51 "Mustang" fighter and the twin engine B-25 "Mitchell" bomber. TheT-6 class uses almost completely stock aircraft with only minor modifications allowed. Given this, the race comes down to, in a large part, pilot skill. The AT-6 has a unique 'loud and raspy' sound because the tips of the propeller come very close to the sound barrier at high rpm. The 1934 design is powered by a single Pratt-Whitney 600 hp Wasp R-1340, nine cylinder, air cooled radial engine. There are approximately 325 AT-6/SNJ aircraft flying in 2021.
