Our first time taking Hunter Mountain Road to the Racetrack. Coming from Los Angeles, we figure it cut out about a hundred extra miles compared going all the way through the valley. Hunter Mountain is pretty easy ... though I'd say you'd want something with good clearance and 4x4 is recommended, if not necessary, due to some parts that were washed out. Some of the dropoffs were a little hair-raising as well.

Note that in winter months Hunter Mountain and the South Pass on Saline Valley Road can be covered in snow, making them far more treacherous. We took this route out of the Racetrack valley this past winter and much of it was spent white-knuckling it in 4-Lo with Descent Control turned on. #NewbAlert
