Dhamaka - Unapologetic Indian Food

Ever since its inception in 2021, Dhamaka had became an instant hit among New York diners for its unapologetic Indian food and received numerous accolades such as Michelin Bib Gourmand, The Best Restaurant of 2021 by New York Times, Eaters, and Esquire.

The word Dhamaka means explosion in Hindi. The restaurant claims to serve unapologetic Indian food that is not shy about using spices. It serves a variety of dishes, some of which are rarely seen outside of India, such as pork face salad, goat kidney, and testicles, etc.

The restaurant is under the corporate group called Unapologetic Food which includes restaurants that abide by their unapologetic philosophy. The restaurants under this group include Adda, Dhamaka, and Semma.

Dishes we had:
Papdi Chaat
Doh Khleh (pig face salad)
Tabak Maaz (lamb rib)
Gurda Kappora (goat kidney and testicles)
Goat Neck Biryani
Murgh Kofta (chicken meatball with poppy seeds)
Paneer Methi (Indian cheese with fenugreek)
Lamb Shank Nihari

The food was very good but also very heavy on spices and heat, it might not be your thing if you can't handle the spice level and sometimes these flavors can overwhelm you. Certain dishes such as the NIhari can also be a bit too salty as is without any rice or other carbs to pair with. The salt level needed to be properly managed since all main courses came without a side by default so it’s clear that those dishes were intended to be eaten alone and not feel too salty, especially with this amount of spices. Still, I enjoyed the meal as a whole.
