I watch and review the shark science in the movie JAWS! #sharks #ecology #marinebiology

I am Dr Sam Munroe, and I’m an Ecologist. That means I study plants and animals and how they interact with their environment. I have loved JAWS since I was a child. My dad let me watch it when I was just 8 years old (grade-A parenting!). This movie inspired me to learn more about sharks and become a shark scientist. I earned a PhD in Shark Ecology in 2015, and they have been a part of my life ever since.

But let’s get real, not much about JAWS is accurate when it comes to shark behaviour! Sadly, this film started a lot of false and dangerous myths about sharks that have brought many species to the brink of extinction. With that in mind, I wanted to watch and review JAWS to help spread the truth about what sharks are really like.

Remember that sharks are important for healthy oceans and most species pose no danger to humans. Shark attacks are incredibly rare, sharks don’t target people, and when attacks do occur, they are often provoked, or a case a mistaken identity. Sharks should be celebrated, not feared.
