A long time ago, the coastline of Kent was host to many different ships from all over the world coming in, to rest. Among these visitors, there was a particular group of seafarers called Vikings. The residents had been through many battles before, but they never grew accustomed to hearing the blare of war horns or seeing the massive longships a-sail on their horizon. So, in this video, we will be diving into Kent's rich history with the Viking invasion that shaped its identity.

The term Viking refers to a member of the Norse culture that invaded Britain and other parts of Europe during the early medieval period. According to the custom at the time, Vikings were called Danes when they invaded Kent even though a large number actually originated from Norway and Sweden.

Although there has been a small amount of archaeological evidence of Viking activity in Kent and historical documents about massive attacks, the earliest records indicate that Vikings invaded Kent as far back as 753. Danes continued to invade Kent until the Normans came along after the 1066 invasion. Attacks on Kent have been recorded over more than 150 years, starting with monasteries that were often built on exposed coastal locations.

Even after being attacked by Vikings, Kent remained a relatively rich and successful area due to topography and commerce in combination with its well-known importance as an important religious center since 7th century AD. During this time, the Viking forces fortified the northern coast of England, and camped on both Sheppey and the Isle of Thanet. However, despite the Viking raiders being promised money in exchange for peace, after spending the winter in Thanet, they destroyed towns located in the eastern county.

In 1016, Kent was at the center of attention for many Saxon, Viking, and Norman clans whose overall goal was to target the rich lands available in this bountiful English county. Their thirst for power and wealth triggered a complete transformation that totally changed the economic and monetary system on which most business transactions operated to this day.
