Chevrolet’s 2017 Silverado 2500HD offers more capability than most Americans need in a truck, but it’s built for worksites, rather than commuting or fetching loads from Home Depot. This year’s biggest news sits right under the hood of each diesel version: a 90% new 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 that makes 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. Whether you choose to go with rear-wheel or available 4-wheel drive with low range, you’ll get a 6-speed Allison automatic.

Another big change for this year is support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but anyone towing with a Silverado HD will appreciate the camera mounted below each wide-angle side mirror. These will help drivers monitor their blind spot on highways or a trailer on the worksite. The Silverado 2500HD can tow up to 18,100 pounds, which doesn’t quite match the capacity of the Ford Super Duty, but George Kennedy got 16.6 mpg combined over a week in the Silverado HD after getting 15.9 over a week in a Super Duty.
