Filmmakers Sam Pollard and Ben Shapiro discuss their award-winning documentary “Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes,” part of PBS’ “American Masters” Series and a finalist for the 2023 Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for Film. The documentary examines the life and legacy of the legendary musician, educator, and civil rights advocate Max Roach (1924-2007), whose papers are in the Library’s Music Division. Additional remarks by Susan H. Vita, Chief, Library of Congress Music Division, and philanthropist Dan Logan of the Revada Foundation of the Logan Family. Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes is the story of a musician whose far-reaching ambitions were inspired and challenged by the inequities of the society around him.
