The Dasgupta Review on the Economics of Biodiversity: with Sir Partha Dasgupta, Sir Roger Gifford and Beccy Speight

Why you should watch: In 2019, Prof Dasgupta was commissioned by the Chancellor to prepare a report on biodiversity, and what we can do to reverse or ameliorate an alarming acceleration in biodiversity losses. The result was published in February: a 610 page volume, which goes far beyond any previous work in this crucial area. Its recommendations - to be discussed at CBP/COP 15 in May and COP26 in November - are radical and comprehensive. Were they to be implemented, they would change the way we think about economics and finance/accounting, and the way we measure development. Prof Dasgupta explains his thinking, with the chairman of the Green Finance Initiative and the CEO of the RSPB.

Moderator: Andrew Hilton (Director, CSFI)

Panellists:

Sir Partha Dasgupta is Frank Ramsey Professor of Economics at Cambridge, a Fellow of St John's College, and of both the Royal Society and the British Academy. His Review was commissioned in March 2019 and delivered in February 2021.

Sir Roger Gifford was the 685th Lord Mayor of London in 2012-13. He is now an Alderman for Cordwainers' Ward in the City, as well as SEB's senior banker in the UK and Vice-chair of the Association of Foreign Banks in London. He was commissioned by the UK government in 2017 to head an independent task force on Green Finance - which led to the Green Finance Initiative, of which he is now chairman.

Rebecca Speight is CEO of the Royal Society for the Preservation of Birds - which, among other things, manages reserves of approximately 140,000 ha in the UK. She joined the RSPB in 2019, from the Woodland Trust, of which she was also CEO.
