Khan is the intellectual superior of the two, but Kirk is more experienced. Seeing how Khan's pattern of battle is in a two dimensional linear pattern, Kirk uses this to his advantage and makes the Enterprise drop below Reliant then rise above from behind and unleashes a rain of phaser and torpedo fire severely crippling the Reliant. But Khan isn't going down unless he's taking the Enterprise down with him as he activates the Genesis Device.
