The QLD government has purchased two western Queensland cattle stations, Tonkoro Station, near Longreach and Melrose Station, near Winton, totaling more than 200,000 hectares of land to be added to the Protected Areas Estate. In addition to facilitating the de-stocking of some 10,000 cattle it will see the systematic removal of buildings, fences, bores, windmills and watering points. This aggressive scheme, will likely result in the depopulation of outback Queensland, threatening the economic viability of communities or even entire regions!
