The good news is that there's been significant progress made in the ability to treat your paruresis, so you can recover fully and lead a better life, one where you're not a slave to your fear, many times without ever visiting a therapist, taking medication, or forcing yourself to stand humiliated at a urinal trying unsuccessfully to urinate in the hopes of "getting over it".

It used to be thought that paruresis and shy bladder was something you would just have to live with and accommodate as best you could, but now there's evidence that just isn't true. Paruresis CAN be overcome and there's MANY people that used to struggle with it that are now living their lives free from the fear that used to hold them back. There's no reason you need to live with your paruresis or shy bladder and accept less of a life than you deserve, because help for your condition is available.

Now that I work so closely with people suffering with paruresis all around the world, I know that some have panic attacks because of their fear of using the bathroom, or have trouble at work or school because they can't concentrate, or give up opportunities to create memories with their family and friends because of their fear. Some need to have the "right conditions" in order to be able to urinate, like being alone, or in a bathroom that isn't too crowded, or in a stall, or with urinal barriers. Others can't urinate anyplace other than when alone in their own home, and it prevents them from fully living their life.

There's virtually no limit to what someone with paruresis will do in order to avoid using the bathroom in public or with other people nearby. Some people are able to blame their paruresis on some childhood event or situation, but many have no idea where their fear came from. But there's one thing that everyone struggling with paruresis shares...they all want it GONE.
