I had a good question come in a few months ago, asking about qualifying customers and what are some of the things I say or do when potentially picking up a new client. I thought it was a really good question, because absolutely there are things we say or do to save time when picking up a new lawn customer.

I wanted to make sure I revisited this topic when I had a little bit more time, because the reality is, it's a very important topic and I had some ideas that have served me well over the years, that I wanted to share and pass on to you guys.

The gist is, we are all extremely busy and have a million things on our plate when we run our lawn and landscape businesses during the spring and summer. The last thing you need is a new potential customer sucking your time away from you when you don't even know if they'd be a good fit for your company.

The answer: qualify them over the phone. It can be the difference between a hot new prospect, or a complete waste of time and a major distraction for your afternoon round of bids and estimates. I learned this a long time ago: not all customers are created equal. And another lesson: not every customer is a GOOD customer for MY business.

In this one I share a half dozen techniques and phrases I use to help me qualify customers for my business. At the end of the day, we only have so much time and energy we can commit to our business. I for one don't want to be driving all across town trying to figure out if someone is going to be a fit for my business.

Use these phrases and sayings and put them into effect in your business. Qualify your prospects and leads and, see if they're someone who should be worth your time and attention to pick up as a new customer. You'll be glad it saved you time and energy and sift through the endless phone calls that usually waste your time.
