Spitalfields was a notorious Victorian London slum, with dark and dangerous courts and alleys. Here, in the late 1800s, the poor lived in dilapidated houses, alongside criminals. But there were also silk-weavers that clung hopelessly to a withering handicraft. It is these people that were the last vestiges of a time before the decent into dystopia. This is the story of the economic decline in their trade, which goes some way to revealing why the fortunes of Spitalfields and its residents declined.
