While its great to have a tap and die set, you may get more use from a thread chaser or rethreading kit. You shouldn't use a tap and die to just clean existing threads or even straighten them up. Taps and Dies should be used to cut new threads on a rod or in a hole. Thread chasers, aka thread cleaner, aka rethreader, are used for cleaning up existing threads and straightening them as well.
