1. Work on your calling
He moved around the world frequently as a child and he lived with various stepfathers.

2. Be thoughtful of your sacrifices
He attended four high schools, including the Etobicoke School of the Arts, from which he was expelled.

3. Take the red pill
He excelled more in sports than in academics, as his educational development was challenged by dyslexia.

4. Be ready
He began his acting career at the age of nine, appearing in a theatre production of Damn Yankees.

5. Be curious
After a few minor roles, he received a sizeable role in the 1986 drama film River's Edge.

6. Enjoy what you do
He played bass guitar in the grunge band Dogstar.

7. Use your life experience
He gained fame for his starring performances in Bill and Ted franchise, Point Break, Speed, and The Matrix.

8. Keep it simple
He has also produced a documentary, Side by Side, and directed the martial arts film Man of Tai Chi.

9. Find happiness
Even with an amplitude of skills, he has spent much of his later career being typecast.

10. Be humble
He wrote the text for a picture book, Ode to Happiness, illustrated by Alexandra Grant.
