The Gemini program served as the crucial bridge between the early Project Mercury and the ambitious Apollo missions that were yet to come, as there were important problems that needed to be solved such as the issue with orbital rendezvous and docking techniques. While the USA was working hard on Gemini however, the Soviets were already completing the first ever spacewalk, giving them an early edge in the Space Race.
