Throughout the 60's and 70's, American automakers were involved in building all sorts of racing and high performance, high image cars. But, only AMC, a company that had previously sworn off getting involved in any of that antisocial racing nonsense, had the stones to build a lightweight, stripped down big cubic inch compact, and market it directly to the horsepower crazed teenage street racers of the era.
