Hey Everyone!

I was asked to build this memorial flag case by someone who had a father who served. It was an honor to get the opportunity to build this case for her fathers flag and to have her display it on her mantel. This is the first case that I have made like this but I hope to make more for people who wish to display and remember the honor and courage it takes to defend and stand for our country.

I started by measuring the folded flag and making a corrugated template so that I could check my fits as I went along. I made this entire project from one board of 4/4 walnut. I cut the top angle to 45° and the two side angles to 22.5°. I use blue tape to check fits and I also added a slight 45° bevel to the interior edges of the forward facing boards.

We chose to use clear acrylic for the "glass" portion as glass is very expensive and this was not going to get moved much. I cut a groove all the way around the interior faces of the boards to accept the acrylic. I left the plastic protective film on the case until she came to pick it up from my shop. She chose to keep it in place until she travelled home to put the flag into it. I also added an 1/8" groove to accept dog tags, pictures, and or notes. It was a simple and nice touch that is subtle but useful.

For finish I chose to use General Finishes Arm R Seal as it gives the walnut such a rich tone and a ice satin sheen. I also added rubber feet to the bottom to help it stay put while its up on the mantel.
