Bringing an epic film like Dune to life is an epic journey that requires a whole lot of endurance and work from every person involved - from the actors, designers, director, to the makeup and prosthetic artists. Working in such intense conditions was o small feat and everyone rose to the occasion to present this brilliant story on the big screen.
Stellan Skarsgård definitely grew to appreciate makeup and prosthetics work since he spent a whopping 80 hours sitting in the makeup area as five artists applied everything he needed to be ready to shoot. As the Baron, he had multiple facial prosthetics applied, a lot of makeup, as well as lugging around the giant Baron body - all the while giving an incredible performance.
While the costumes may be more muted in colour, they are nothing short of impressive - this whole world has around one thousand looks created! Of those thousand, two hundred were specialty costumes, many of which proved very complex to bring to life. The three different groups in Dune were designed to flow together, while highlighting the differences and portraying very specific characters. The inspirations for all these were pretty varied and included everything from art, mythology, medieval nuns and the colours of the landscape of Jordan, where the production spent so much time filming.
One of the outfits that many actors had to wear were “stillsuits.” For Timothée Chalamet, the experience was very sweaty since the thick rubber caused any moisture produced wound up trapped in the suit. These were definitely useful for helping the actors go method with their characters, but it definitely wasn’t the most comfortable!
