The UAE continues to reel from floods caused by the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the desert state, with airlines, banks, and city transport facing major disruptions and service outages.
Hundreds of cars were left abandoned on Dubai's Sheikh Zayed Highway as drivers' engines died while water rose around them.
A massive clean-up is underway as field work teams "continue their intensive efforts to ensure full recovery and the return of life to normal in all affected areas," the UAE's Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Roughly a year's worth of rain pummeled the normally bone-dry Gulf country in a span of just 12 hours. And in many homes and businesses across Dubai and other emirates, running water and power are no longer functioning.
On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on Tuesday was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949. But parts of the nation had experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms just last month.
