Dr. Weiner has a theory, which he will elaborate in this video about treating atrophic rolling acne scars. Many of these scars have collagen fiber tethering the skin, which attach to the deeper layers of the dermis, subcutaneous fat, and deep fat layers. Radiofrequency and lasers have a propensity to travel through collagen. Therefore, it is theoretically possible to cause collagen contraction and further tethering if heat is applied using RF or lasers. Dr. Weiner suggests cannula subcision of these type of scars at the dermal/subcutaneous junction using cannulas prior to lasers and RF/RFM. There are well documented benefits of subcision for these scars and this is just another reason supporting this technique.
