In the beginning, there was a lumbering dinosaur known as the body-on-frame SUV. This monster had a degree of off-road ability and lots of cargo space, but that’s where its attributes ended.

Today, SUVs have evolved and at the top end, these rides deliver equal measures of versatility and luxury in a highly desirable package. Not only have they replaced the traditional, antiquated body-on-frame SUV, they're rapidly replacing luxury sedans as the new ride of choice — as of this past August, almost 65 per cent of all luxury vehicles sold in Canada were SUVs and crossovers of one size or another.

The Audi Q7, BMW X5, Genesis GV80, Lincoln Aviator, and Mercedes-Benz GLE are five luxurious examples that not only pamper, but also deliver a rewarding drive. They're also all offered with at least one optional engine, letting them live up to the "sport" part of the SUV equation. They may be family haulers, but they can be fun to drive, too.
