After several runway overruns/runway excursion had caused severe damage to aircraft and injuries to passengers, the FAA decided to come up with a solution. A system had to be developed that is capable of stopping aircraft, small and large, after they overrun a runway. Various materials were tested to find out how to assist these pilots of planes in emergency situations, or after they had operated their aircraft in an unsafe manner.
