Is Ravi the best we can do? From Ravi Ross in "Jessie" to Raj Koothrappali from "Big Bang Theory," South Asians deserve accurate and more representation. More representation, however, does not mean misrepresentation. The society that we live in is becoming increasingly diverse as generations go by; it’s time we see this on the screens and media we look at every day. Mallika’s talk highlights the importance of seeing all diverse backgrounds included on television, specifically focusing on one’s personality and lived experiences, rather than their stereotypes; she further narrows down how we, as individuals, have the power to make this difference. Mallika Reddy is a senior at Saint Francis High School in Mountain View, California. As a young South Asian woman growing up in America, Mallika noticed the lack of accurate portrayals of South Asians in film and television. She wants to bring attention to the lack of representation and the misrepresentation of South Asians in her talk. In her free time, Mallika enjoys playing tennis, watching The Office, and walking her dog. She hopes to influence everyone to notice the effects film has on our beliefs and inspire South Asians to feel more comfortable in their own skin. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
