Solidarity is a key word in struggles for a more just world—but what does it mean, and how can movements build enough of it to change society?
In Boston Review’s summer 2023 issue, organizer and political theorist Mie Inouye leads a forum on obstacles to collective action today. Rejecting the language of “allyship” and the politics of deference, she makes the case for maintaining solidarity through conflict in durable institutions over time, none of which is possible without the hard work of good organizing. In this conversation with organizer and race, ethnicity, and migration scholar Daniel Martinez HoSang, she discusses her vision of coalition building and ways to achieve solidarity across difference.
